The Artericambi gallery is pleased to announce the new collaboration with the Bulgarian artist Ivan Moudov who will open his solo exhibition entitled “Romanian Trick” on April 24, 2009. For the first time in Italy, the artist will present a new long-term project, almost a natural development of Fragments (2002-2007), previously exhibited at the 52nd Venice Biennale. The latter consists of four red suitcases containing, as the title suggests, fragments of works by other artists, stolen by Moudov himself in galleries and museums.
His interest in the practice of collecting as a representation of the art system is consolidated in Romanian Trick (2008), exactly a “sleight of hand” that results in an extremely material and performative action, in which coins of one and two Euros are destroyed using only one hand. A trick that Moudov learned on the street and for which, following a precise code of conduct, he had to pay in order to know its secret. The exhibition space thus becomes the new place to share it and the action of unveiling takes on the material connotation of an asset to be sold at a much higher price than what it was purchased for. A sort of informal economy, based on trust and curiosity between the artist and the client, which however produces a tangible and concrete result: Moudov invests the money earned to buy the works of other artists, thus creating his private collection. On this occasion, the installations resulting from the performances carried out so far in European public institutions and private galleries will be presented, including the one carried out at Artericambi.
Together with Romanian Trick, the works collected up to now will also be exhibited: Mirror – Cover (VOGUE) (2000) by Olaf Nicolai, A Master’s Span (Roni Horn Rebecca) (2007) by Italo Zuffi, Visiting a Museum of Contemporary Art under Hypnosis (2006) by Christoph Keller; 60 meters (1994) by Maria Lindberg and ЁБ ТВОЮ МАТЬ, РОССИЯ! (Fuck You Mother Russia) (1997) by Alexander Brenner and Barbara Schurz. Wine for Opening, the Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Bulgaria by the same artist, will be served on the evening of the inauguration.
