Unlike photography as it is commonly understood, the work of Fabio Sandri involves a physical relationship between the physical object and the photographical material, a relationship that becomes its “trace”. Reality “falls” on photographic material, alone, without anyone’s help. The figure of the artist is recast beside the “phenomenon”, which therefore excludes intervention on the part of the photographer. Triggering off an event, it is no longer the human eye but the photographic material itself that sees. In Sandri’s work the photograph is predisposed to “discovering” something that only photographic paper can record, as if it had so many eyes seeing reality, each from its own viewpoint. What we have, therefore, is a multiple perspective, not a central one like that with which humans are endowed. The dimensions of these works match those of the spaces that were crossed, on a scale of 1:1. Here once more, Fabio Sandri’s works differ from conventional photography, which, as has been noted, is on a reduced scale with respect to reality.
