In the Apartment exhibition, the Vicenza artist Fabio Sandri presents a large installation of photographic paper that reproduces an apartment on a 1: 1 scale and a video installation.
The medium that allows Fabio Sandri to “precipitate” lived spaces onto two-dimensional surfaces is the photogram, an early-twentieth-century discovery process that involves the use of direct impression photographic paper. Due to the effect of the light on the photosensitive emulsion, an imprint of absolutely mechanical origin and strong evocative power is created on the sheet: a sort of counter-shadow that captures and renders spatial depths by shades of gray, at the same time managing to describe in detail the surfaces of the elements that characterize a space (for example the design of the floor tiles).
In this way, Sandri proceeds to map all the rooms of a home: each “photogrammed” room has kept its real dimensions, which do not necessarily coincide with those of the exhibition space. These large sheets of photographic paper, therefore, not only occupy the walls of the gallery, but also clutter the floor, thus accentuating the complexity of the relationship between the original space (the house) and the place that houses the simulacrum (the gallery ).
The video installation Construction further articulates the reflection on the built and lived space. The photographic paper, which here is virgin, is subjected to a process of continuous impression, evidenced by its progressive darkening, which will last for the entire period of the exhibition. This process, due to the presence of ambient light, is more concentrated and rapid in the area of the paper where a video is projected, the subject of which is the act of walling up a window. Again the two-dimensional mechanics of the photosensitive support is confronted with – or rather at the disposal of – the will to register a space and its alteration.
