DE BRAUW

Inez de Brauw (1989, The Hague) lives and works in Amsterdam. She received her BFA with honors at HKU Utrecht in 2014. In 2016-2017 she was artist-in-residence at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.

In her work, she investigates the feeling of friction between different era’s and different cultures. In her paintings, she appropriates the decorative patterns appearing on wallpapers, pillows and furniture in lifestyle magazines, which by the time they appear have lost their historical significance. The forms move away from their original shape and morph into others. The migration of shapes becomes a metaphor for a feeling of being without lineage, without roots, adrift between historical specificity, kitsch and irony.

Recent exhibitions include ‘Thuis’ in the Kunsthal of Kunstlinie Almere (2021), ‘On sight’ in 38CC in Delft (2020), ‘Lost and Found in Paradis’ hosted by ARTUNER in Paris (2019) and ‘Trouble in Paradise’, at the Kunsthal Rotterdam (2018). De Brauw was nominated for multiple awards including Royal Award for Modern Painting in 2018, where she was also exhibited at Exhibition Royal Award for Modern Painting (Amsterdam). In addition, de Brauw received numerous grants, including the Stipend for Emerging Artists from Mondriaan Fonds in 2018.
