Outside night” collects the most recent works of the Northern Irish artist, who continues to explore through the photographic medium a reality on the border between urban and rural spaces, focusing in particular on nocturnal landscapes.

They are images of ordinary and at first sight insignificant places: a road that makes a double curve near a wood, an underpass, a courtyard, a modest railway line, all places that the artist observes during her daily journeys around Belfast, where she lives and works. These spaces are transformed by the power of light and the contrast with the dark, charging themselves with a dramatic tension and an unreal and often sinister aspect. The artist manages to suspend time for a moment, creating an atmosphere of stasis and a growing sense of expectation, so that the viewer has the impression that something is about to happen or has just happened. While deliberately devoid of people, these places retain a strong human presence.

Mary McIntyre’s research investigates the complex relationships between photography and a certain pictorial and cinematographic tradition, recognizing how the latter influence, on a subconscious level, the viewer’s perception of space. Although not made with the intention of commenting on the political situation in Northern Ireland, her works take on a particular connotation in the context of recent events on her land.
